LITERARY GATHERING «EL LUGAR»
A new year with always stimulating books
We will meet to talk about El lugar (Tusquets Editores, 2020, 112 pages), by the 2022 Nobel laureate Annie Ernaux.
With a polished, precise and at times dazzling language, the French writer talks to us, among other topics, about family life, the figure of her father and conflicting worlds, class distances and the search for one’s own place in the society. Without a doubt, many other aspects of this excellent work will emerge in our meeting, which appeals to the intelligence and at the same time to the feelings.
It will be face-to-face at the Marbella Club and by Zoom – We will send the link to enter the meeting in due time.
The year ends and we continue reading
We will talk about “ALL SOULS “ (Debolsillo, 2006, 232 pages) by Javier Marías. It will be the small and special tribute of AMUM to the great Madrid writer, recently deceased.
Novel with autobiographical dyes “All souls” tells the history of the two years that the narrator spent at the University of Oxford. It has been said that in “… a world of secrets and intrigues, of ceremony rites and crazy dinners, of hidden and sick pass present, the narrator is weaving his own” disturbance “and his own history with that of the inhabitants from the city “preserved in syrup”, until discovering what elements as crazy as a railway bridge over a river in India, unfortunate lovers, a spy race or the tiny island of Redonda, will become part of their life, marked already forever for those unexpected relationships of love and friendship between all souls

LITERARY GATHERING «EL SEDUCTOR»
Written in Yiddish and now translated into Spanish, this work by the Polish-American Nobel laureate Isaac Bashevis Singer is a great satire of the way of life of the Jewish community in New York in the middle of the last century. But also a delicious “sitcom”. With fine humor at times, caustic at others, Singer tells us about love affairs, adultery and lies, but also uprooting and guilt. It will undoubtedly be a very entertaining gathering.
The fullness of the books
Set in China at the beginning of the 20th century and structured from the point of view of different women, with great sensitivity, beauty and elegance, Buck tells us about the clash of ideas and cultures, of the East (wind from the East) and the West (wind from the West) of tradition and modernity and of the role of men and the submission of women. We will reflect on this at our meeting in October, which will undoubtedly be, as always, extremely interesting.
It will be in person at the Marbella Club and by Zoom – In due course we will send the link to enter the meeting.
LITERARY GATHERING «AUTUMN »
The excitement of reading a good book in summer
In our gathering in August we will talk about “The Leaf Storm” by Gabriel García Márquez (Debolsillo, 2003, 176 pages). Published in 1959, it is one of the important works of the author, which takes us to the literary birth of the mythical Macondo, to the imprint of Greek tragedy, to the influence of William Faulkner and to the outline of recurring characters in his later creations. We will marvel at the powerful imagination of the Colombian Nobel laureate and his masterful writing. A very promising discussion.
LITERARY GATHERING «THE YOUNG LADY AND OTHER STORIES »
Monday, July 18, 2022 at 6:30 p.m.
The books and us…
In our July gathering we will talk about The young lady and other stories (UVE books, 2021, 264 pages) by Emilia Pardo Bazán. It will be our special tribute to this exceptional Galician, one of the great European writers and intellectuals of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, author of novels, essays, travel books and stories. A tireless fighter for the emancipation of women, she introduced the French and British debate on feminism in Spain. Our meeting will be an excellent opportunity to check into her figure.
The next literary gathering will be on Monday, June 20. The book: It is not a river, by Selva Almada.
We are waiting for you, we will have a good time and as always we might learn a lot. Exclusive activity for members.
LITERARY GATHERING «THE WILD GIRL»
Monday May the 16th at 6.30 PM
The May gathering will be dedicated to The Wild Girl (Atico de los libros, 2019, 384 pages), by
the American writer and zoologist Delia Owens. It is the story of Kya, a girl who lives in the
swamps of North Carolina, and which has been said to be “a beautiful book […]. A mysterious
murder, a coming of age story and an ode to nature. » Resilience, love, abandonment,
loneliness, loss, hope, prejudice, survival, all of this is present in this work that we will enjoy
and will be moved by. A great debate awaits us.
The richness of reading.
We will talk about “La hora de la estrella” (Siruela, 2021, 112 pages), by the essential Clarice Lispector, one of the greatest Brazilian writers of the 20th century. With a very special poetic language, with very powerful images, she tells us “the story of a wounded innocence”, that of Macabea, a young woman from northeast Brazil “who did not know that she was what she was” and therefore “did not feel unhappy.” Published in 1977, it was Lispector’s last work. It will be fascinating to enter her world.

LITERARY GATHERING «TODO UN PLACER»
Good books are with us
We will talk about “Todo un placer”: An anthology of female erotic stories (Berenice/books4pocket, 2008, 186 pages), with selection and prologue by Elena Medel. A book that “fights against various prejudices and wishes to break spears and unify desires. But, above all, it pretends to be literature.” A lot to think about and debate…

We will talk about The Frozen Heart, by Almudena Grandes (Tusquets Editores, 2007, 936 pages). Winner of several awards, including the best novel written in Spanish from the Booksellers Guild of Madrid and the seventh novel from the José Manuel de Lara Foundation. Throut this work Grandes tells us about the recent Spanish history, about love and the feelings, of betrayal and the desire for revenge, about the exile and return and also of that beloved city, Madrid. An exciting story told in fluid language, with courage and great respect. It will allow us to have an excellent debate, which will also be our little tribute to the great writer from Madrid.

LITERARY GATHERING «THE DEAD»
In 2022 we continue to enjoy good books
We will reflect on THE DEAD, a splendid tale by James Joyce included in his work Dubliners. Considered one of the best stories in history, it provides an excellent opportunity to discuss the work of the great Irish author. We will ask ourselves what is the meaning of life, love and, of course, death …
It will be in person at the Marbella Club, if the sanitary conditions allow it, and by Zoom – We will send the link to enter the meeting in due course.

Our tradition of good reading continues …
We will talk about The Stone of Patience, by the Franco-Afghan author Atiq Rahimi, 2008 Goncourt Prize winner. Published in Spain by Siruela, it is an intense, moving and dazzling account of life in a small town in Afghanistan. It speaks to us of the fanaticism and violence of that society, but also of a woman who acquires voice, freedom and autonomy precisely through that magic stone that is Syngué Sabour.
LITERARY GATHERING «EL INFINITO EN UN JUNCO»
We will talk about Irene Vallejo’s wonderful book El infinito en un Junco (Siruela, 2021, 452 pages). Exquisite history of that wonderful object that is the book, born five thousand years ago, when the Egyptians knew how to use a reed (papyrus). In this essay Vallejo presents us, as Abad Faciolince has said, “a poetic and precise account of when books were young and everything happened for the first time”.
Listen our literary Gathering over “ El infinito en un Junco”
We will reflect on “The ridiculous idea of never seeing you again” (La ridícula idea de no Volver a verte) (Seix Barral, 2014, 240 pages) by Rosa Montero.
In this excellent tribute to women who, like Marie Curie, have had to confront society to fight for what they believed in, the author talks to us -among other issues- of overcoming pain, the greatness of sex, the good death and the beautiful life, of science and of ignorance- all of which is good material for a deep and enriching debate.

LITERARY GATHERING «CANCIÓN DULCE»
Fall begins and books are still our good friends …
We will reflect on Sweet Song (Cabaret Voltaire, 2017, 288 pages) by the Franco-Moroccan journalist and writer Leïla Slimani, winner of the Goncourt 2016 award. An X-ray of current society, it talks about cultural, racial and class prejudices, love and education, the role of women as professionals and motherhood …

We continue with the good company of books … we will talk about Bagheria (tiny, 2013, 172 pages), work of one of the great contemporary Italian writers, Dacia Maraini. History of a girl who in 1947 reaches the Sicilian coast by boat, coming from Japan and that many years later, already adult, returns to Bagheria. In his memories, in his evocaciones, he talks about history, art and literature, unbelieving in his defense of women.

LITERARY GATHERING “DISTANT STAR”
We continue with the good company of books …
We will talk about DISTANT STAR by Roberto Bolaño (Anagrama, 2006, 160 pages). One of the great novels of the Chilean authors (1953-2003), an intellectual thriller in which the aesthetics of the multiple, participation and responsibility, intertextuality, etc., are present, a range of concepts that allows an exciting debate.
We will talk about “The noise and the fury” (Alianza Editorial, 2013, 392 pages), the work of one of the most influential authors of 20th century Anglo-Saxon literature, William Faulkner. A deep portrait of the decadence of a southern family in the United States at the beginning of the 20th century, the Comptons, allows us to delve into the work of this disruptive author, innovative in form and substance, who penetrates into the dark sides or of twilight of the feelings, emotions and instincts of human beings. His stamp can be seen in authors such as Onetti, García Márquez or Carpentier. It is worth reading. It’s almost an obligation …

LITERARY GATHERING “DAISY MILLER”
Our monthly meeting with good literature (activity only for members)
An excellent opportunity to meet again with the great Henry James through a work that tells us about the different values, customs and prejudices that a young American woman faced in Europe in the second half of the 19th century. LITERARY GATHERING «ENTRE VISILLOS»
By Zoom. (Only for members)
We will talk about ENTRE VISILLOS by Carmen Martín Gaite (Destination, 2012, 288 pages), elected at our last meeting. “Via the daily occupations of a group of young people, their anguish, boredom and lack of imagination, the author draws a passionate profile of a youth without illusion. “We will undoubtedly have a excellent discussion.
In May we will read Daisy Miller _by Henry James _ (Laertes, 2011, 94
pages) _ and in _ June _The noise and the fury, _by William Faulkner (Alianza Editorial, 2013, 392 pages).
