WOMEN IN THE BACKROUND OF HISTORY

AMALIA LÓPEZ CABRERA (1838-1899)

She learned the photographic technique from the Count of Lipa, a friend of the artist Juan Daguerre, and became the first woman to practice the profession of photographer in Spain, since it was usual for the wives and daughters of photographers to work in the laboratory but not to drive. the camera, controlled the photographic process and signed their works. She signed them as Amalia López de López, by virtue of her marriage, but without losing hers.

She was a descendant of a family of rich merchants, and spent her childhood on Posada Street, next to the Francisco Javier de León Bendicho High School. At just over twenty years old she met the man who became her husband, Francisco López Vizcaíno, a widowed printer from Jaén. She married in 1857 and moved to Jaén.

In 1860 she opened her own studio, advertising:

“Amalia L. de López: portraits, groups, views, in all sizes; Photographs are taken even on cloudy days; almost instantaneous exposure time; “They are not delivered if they do not satisfy customers.”
