ABOUT US
AMUM is a non-profit association created in the city of Marbella in 2009.
Its social purposes are: to promote understanding and friendship among university women around the world, regardless of their race, nationality, religion or politics; promote international cooperation, promote the development of education; represent university women in international organizations and encourage the full application of their knowledge and experience to solve problems that arise at any level of public life (national, regional or international), and encourage participation in their solution.
It currently has more than 90 members of different degrees and nationalities and belongs to the Spanish Federation of University Women, FEMU, the University Women of Europe, UWE, and the Graduate Women International, GWI.
GOALS
AMUM believes that education is the passport to the future, since tomorrow belongs to those who prepare today. As confirmed by multiple studies, education is – while being the cornerstone of the development of a society – the first barrier that women encounter in their efforts to enter the professional world.
History
The Spanish Association of University Women (AEMU), to which AMUM belongs since 2009, enjoys a long and prestigious history worldwide. She was one of the first to join the FIMU (International Federation of University Women), and she did so thanks to the drive and commitment of Clara Campoamor and María de Maeztu (president in the first years).
After the break of the Civil War, such illustrious women as Isabel García Lorca, Pilar Lago, Jimena Menéndez Pidal and Soledad Ortega refounded the association in 1953, although it did not survive more than four decades. It closed its doors in 1990.
At the beginning of this century, Spanish university universities began to reorganize to get Spain to re-enter the GWI. The federation has been present in the UN with voice, but without vote, since 1946, and, as education advisor, in UNESCO.
VISION
AMUM’s vision is to achieve a just and equal society, in which women participate fully in public, economic, professional and artistic life.
MISSION
The focus of attention is on education: AMUM works to facilitate access to education for women, especially those who, due to social or economic circumstances, find greater obstacles in achieving that aspiration.
ACTIONS
To achieve these objectives, actions are carried out in three areas, especially in the area of influence of Marbella and its surroundings:
1 Granting of university scholarships to women
2 Provision of continuing training
3 Organization of events always articulated to offer spaces in which dialogue and exchange of ideas enrich the social fabric in the pursuit of equality.
All the actions of the association are governed by the ideals of plurality, respect, equality, sorority and integrity.
