LITERARY GATHERING

(Only for AMUM members)

We will be discussing Recollections of Things to Come (Los recuerdos del porvenir, Alfaguara, 2019, 352 pages), by the Mexican author Elena Garro. With its dazzling prose and rich imagination, and the town of Ixtepec as both protagonist and narrator, this book—along with Pedro Páramo—is, according to fellow Mexican author Guadalupe Nettel, probably the finest Mexican novel written in the 20th century.

It will give us the opportunity to address, in our discussion, issues such as violence, fear, racism, envy, jealousy, and all manner of political and social injustices that paralyse this small town – and, in particular, the collective and individual oppression suffered by many of its women.
